Dolan will be supplying fourty five Ares road bikes for the team and fifteen Stryke Time Trial bikes. The key for any bike in the pro peloton where the stresses and strains go way beyond what the riders dish out on the road is strength and durability and riders in the team pounding out thousands of miles on roads around Europe are still using their original bikes. In a review by Robin Wilmott on the internet, he reports how the bike used by Andy Fenn, who was third in the Under 23 World Road Race Championship, survived a crash in Paris Roubaix as well as all the power that road sprinter Fenn produces.

That alone is a comforting thought for anyone buying a bike as crashes are part and parcel of racing. The design of the semi sloping monocoque frame sees specially shaped box section chain stays for extra stiffness and a geometry that provides the rider with a bike that handles well at speed such as on descents where it provides the rider with an accurate feel around the twists and turns.

Cables for the pro spec UD carbon frame are internal and the designer of the frame, Terry Dolan, says that having their bikes in a team like An Post helps them improve the bikes even more. Although less aerodynamic, this allows for a wider range of aerobars to be used, meaning a wider range of positions. The TRP concealed calipers — one under the chainstays with the other in its own housing behind the fork crown — are frankly a faff to set up. If you back off a spring tension screw too far the spring pings out and you have to take the whole brake apart to reset it.

There are barrel adjusters on the cables next to the head tube, but not enough adjustment to switch between old-style narrow rims and the new generation of wider rim. Regularly changing pads for alu or carbon braking surfaces would be very fiddly, especially as the chainset partially blocks the rear one. However, they ideally need to be set up for one size and type of rim only. Time trial bikes are generally built for speed, not for comfort and the Dolan fits the mould.

However, the overriding feeling is one of crispness not harshness. Like the front brakes, the bottom bracket-mounted TRP brakes are positioned to improve overall aerodynamics.

That comfort also derives from the ISM Adamo time-trial saddle. The Adamo also steers you into a nice aero position thanks to the softly sloping front arms, which has your arms nestling onto the Alpina aerobars…. The Alpina bars on test featured carbon base and extensions, were comfortable, and ensured solid and responsive handling.

The TRP brakes are neatly positioned behind the front forks to minimise aerodynamic disturbances.
