Not able to install windows updates vista

No other software loaded yet. Gets to SP1 keeps installing. Followed steps from above, looked like everything was great. Rebooted then went into startup recovery, couldn't recover after a few attempts of restore finally did. I am going to go back through steps when I get home tonight maybe I left one out. Have restored Vista on many units and this is the first run in with this problem???????
